2017 Melbourne Japanese Summer Festival

The popular Melbourne Japanese Summer Festival is shaping up to be the biggest ever staged returning to Federation Square.

Come and check out the Wadaiko Rindo performance on the main stage kicking off the festival at 12.20pm.

The festival will run between 12PM and 6PM on Sunday, 26th February 2017. Opening up the delights of Japan, this vibrant, action-packed afternoon is filled with traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, food, activities and entertainment.

The highlights of Japan will be on show, with traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, performances, food, activities and dances providing an exciting afternoon for all to enjoy.

Held for the 8th year in a row, the event will celebrate the Bon Festival, which involves giving thanks to one’s ancestors and is one of the most important traditions in Japan. Everyone will have a chance to learn the traditional Bon Odori, a dance performed in a circle by participants wearing cotton kimono known as the Yukata.

Food stalls showcasing culinary delights from popular Japanese restaurants will line the River Terrace offering a real taste of Japan, from Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki to crowd-favourites like Japanese beers and Ramen.

The festival’s entertainment includes vibrant cultural performances of taiko drumming, Japanese song and dance.
